HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison men's basketball has added a pair of junior college transfers in
Develle Phillips and
Antanee Pinkard for the 2017-18 season, Head Coach
Louis Rowe announced on Thursday morning.
Â
Phillips, who is listed at 6-9, 225 pounds, hails from Bowie, Md. and was ranked as the sixth-best player in the state of Maryland as a senior at Clinton Christian. The forward played one season at DePaul before transferring to Odessa College for his sophomore campaign.
Â
After appearing in 10 games at DePaul, Phillips averaged 5.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in just 15.9 minutes per contest at Odessa this past season, shooting 59.3 percent from the floor. He also racked up 43 blocks in just 33 games.
Â
Pinkard, a 6-4, 200-pound guard, started his collegiate career at Hill College after starring for J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster, Pa. He averaged more than 15 points per game as a junior at J.P. McCaskey before racking up 9.1 points per contest and shooting 59.9 percent from the floor this past season at Hill.
Â
Phillips will join the Dukes as a junior, while Pinkard will be a sophomore in the fall. Both players are immediately eligible to play in 2017-18.
Â
"We're very excited to add these two guys," Rowe said. "They are great kids and bring a lot of athleticism to our team. Develle is very long and can cover a lot of ground. He's a mobile, athletic big who has turned himself into a great shotblocker. Antanee can attack the rim, score from multiple levels and add a lot of good experience for us."
Â
Phillips and Pinkard are the sixth and seventh signees for 2017-18, joining incoming freshman
Darius Banks, who signed earlier this spring, as well as freshmen
Zach Jacobs,
Greg Jones,
Matt Lewis and
Dwight Wilson, who all signed during the fall's early signing period.
Â
JMU returns two starters from its 2016-17 campaign and will add guard
Stuckey Mosley and forward
Gerron Scissum, who each redshirted this past season after transferring from Toledo and VCU, respectively.
