HARRISONBURG, Va. - Louis Rowe, head coach of the James Madison men's basketball team, announced on Friday the signing of Darius Banks, the fifth member of the Dukes' 2017 recruiting class, to a National Letter of Intent for the 2017-18 season.
Â
Listed at 6-5, 210 pounds, Banks hails from St. Petersburg High School in St. Petersburg, Fla. Banks is rated a three-star recruit by ESPN, Scout.com and 247Sports, and is ranked as high as the No. 34 small forward in the 2017 recruiting class.
Â
"Darius is exactly the type of player we're trying to bring to JMU," Rowe said. "He's a tough, physical wing who can score for us and battles on the defensive end. He'll fit in well with the players we already have and has the skills we're looking for at both ends of the floor."
Â
Banks was named the Tampa Bay Times' Pinellas County Player of the Year in 2015-16 as a junior before breaking St. Petersburg High's scoring record and the 2,000-point plateau as a senior this past year.
Â
Rowe has already signed four players for the 2017-18 campaign, adding Zach Jacobs, Greg Jones, Matt Lewis and Dwight Wilson during the fall's early signing period. All four, as well as Banks, will join the Dukes this fall as freshmen.
Â
JMU returns two starters from its 2016-17 campaign and will add guard Stuckey Mosley and forward Gerron Scissum, who each redshirted this past season after transferring from Toledo and VCU, respectively.
