HARRISONBURG, Va. - Former Oregon State All-American Colleen Boyd has joined the James Madison women's soccer team as an assistant coach for the 2018 season, as announced by first-year head coach Joshua Walters Sr. on Monday afternoon.
Â
Boyd, who will work primarily with JMU's goalkeepers, joins the Dukes after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Arizona State for the 2016 season after a pair of seasons at Cal State Northridge.
Â
"I am excited for the girls and the JMU program to have Colleen join our coaching staff," Walters said. "She has done what many of these girls dream of doing as a professional player and All-American. If you spend any amount of time with Colleen, you quickly realize the energy and drive she brings to the table. We are looking to elevate the JMU program in the collegiate soccer world and Colleen is a perfect fit."
Â
At CSUN, Boyd guided the Matador goalkeepers from two shutouts in 2013, the season before her arrival, to a combined 15 shutouts across the next two seasons, while dropping CSUN's goals-against average from 1.64 in 2013 to 1.12 from 2014-15.
Â
In the summer of 2016, Boyd was selected for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) 30 Under 30 program, an initiative designed to give participants exposure to the Association's membership, and the opportunity to take advantage of educational offerings, such as diplomas and the NSCAA Convention. Boyd was chosen for the program from a pool of 350 applicants.
Â
A 2012 graduate of Oregon State, Boyd was a standout goalkeeper for the Beavers. She earned NSCAA All-American honors, All-Pac 12 honors and All-West Region honors during her time in Corvallis. She ended her career with the most shutouts and lowest goals-against-average in program history and was a two-time captain and competed in three NCAA Tournaments.Â
Â
After graduating from Oregon State, Boyd played two seasons of professional soccer. She played a year with the WPSL Western New York Flash in Buffalo, N.Y., and helped lead the squad to the league championship. Boyd also played a season for the Boston Breakers as part of the NWSL.Â
Â
The Dukes, who return nine starters and four All-Colonial Athletic Association picks from the 2017 team that closed the regular season with a 9-9 record and earned their fifth consecutive CAA Tournament berth, will continue their six-match spring schedule this Friday, March 16, when they welcome Georgetown to Sentara Park at 7 p.m.
Â
All home matches are open to the public and free to all spectators.
