History of Sentara Park
JMU Women's Lacrosse, Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer and Women's Cross Country/Track & Field programs compete at Sentara Park, at the corner of Port Republic Road and Neff Road. Originally dubbed University Park, the facility was renamed Sentara Park in 2016 as part of the university's first corporate naming partnership with the local healthcare provider.
Sentara Park is a multi-field, lighted complex, offering both bermuda grass and synthetic/AstroTuf Gameday Grass practice fields as well as a varsity nautural grass playing surface. The original facility opened in the fall of 2012 with the uppermost field converted to an additional practice area in 2014 for a total of three practice fields in addition to the competition venue.
A major contruction project in 2022 added the Duenkel Athletics Complex, adding game day locker rooms to be used by all sports. Located on the side wings of the spectator seating areas, these auxiliary buildings provide home and away locker rooms, sports medicine support space as well as a permanent concessions area. The project was made possible in large part by private financial support from Doug and Alison Duenkel and family.
The video board was upgraded to a Daktronics display system in 2021 to expand playback capabilities. Lacrosse shot clocks were added in 2016 to accommodate new competition rules for the sport. A new parking lot off of Port Republic Road was added in 2014 to add fan-friendly parking options closer to the competition venue.
The facility configuration for track and field includes a nine-lane track, high jump and pole vault setups, two sand pits for jumps, an infield javelin area as well as a separate throws area for shot put, discus and hammer immediately adjacent to the track. In addition to the outdoor space at Sentara Park, the program uses indoor space in the Convocation Center for sprint practices. Recent indoor additions have included an indoor throws area in Godwin Hall, conveniently near the track and field offices and locker rooms, as well as an indoor throws cage in the upper level of the Convo.
