HARRISONBURG, Va. - Former James Madison women's soccer standout
Ashley Herndon has joined Portland Thorns FC of the National Women's Soccer League as part of the 2017 preseason roster, the club announced earlier this week.
Â
Herndon, who completed a standout four-year career with the Dukes in 2016,
graduated early in December in order to prepare for professional soccer. She joined the Thorns as one of six forwards invited to preseason camp, competing alongside U.S. Women's National Team member Tobin Heath and Canadian National Team legend Christine Sinclair.
Â
The Thorns will cap their preseason camp with the 2017 Thorns Spring Invitational from March 26 to April 1, as they play host to the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team, Houston Dash and Chicago Red Stars in a trio of doubleheaders on March 26, March 29 and April 1. Portland will then open its 2017 regular season against the Orlando Pride on Saturday, April 15.
Â
At JMU, Herndon capped one of the most decorated careers in program history in the fall, taking home CAA Player of the Year honors after leading the high-powered JMU offense in goals (11), points (28), shots (82), shots on goal (35) and game-winning goals (5) in 2016. She concluded her career fourth all-time in program history in career goals (37), fifth in assists (27) and third in points (101) after becoming just the fourth Duke to rack up 100 points in her career.
Â
The Dukes open their spring exhibition schedule this weekend, traveling to Charlotte for a 12 p.m. match on Saturday, March 18. JMU will play eight matches this spring in preparation for its 2017 campaign.
