PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior
Kennedy King topped the 18-athlete field in the women's long jump to earn the James Madison track & field team's second gold medal in as many days and put the team in second place out of 29 scoring teams at the 2016 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Outdoor Championships at the Weaver Track & Field Stadium on Saturday.
King leapt 5.87 meters (19'3.25") to beat the second-best jumper by .03 meters. Fellow junior
Ebony Owusu-Sampah also competed in the long jump, placing sixth with a distance of 5.70 meters (18'8.5").
As a team, the Dukes have tallied 24 points through seven events scored to head into the third and final day of the Championships right behind Cornell who has 25 points.
Leading the way for the Dukes in their running events was sophomore
Aereale Scott, who continued her standout season with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 14.31 seconds before crossing the finish line in 13.98 seconds, her second-best time of the year, to finish second in the semifinals.Â
Saturday kicked off with the 4x100-meter relay prelims and James Madison received a strong performance from junior
Annie Johnson, Scott, King and freshman
Meredith Willis. The quartet placed second and moved into second on the all-time JMU women's track & field top-10 list with a time of 45.46 seconds to earn a spot in the finals.
Also qualifying for Sunday's finals was
Carol Strock, who placed ninth out of 30 runners in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:34.44. Johnson ran a 12.16 in the 100-meter dash to move on to the semifinals, but just missed the cut in her third race of the day.
James Madison returns to action on Sunday with the shot put scheduled to start the day at 9:30 a.m.
