HARRISONBURG, Va. -
Ignacio Gimeno Montero and
Ben Tucker have signed National Letters of Intent to join the James Madison men's golf team for the 2017-18 season, as announced by Head Coach
Jeff Forbes on Thursday afternoon.
Â
"We're excited to have both of these guys join our program," Forbes said. "We are getting two excellent student-athletes and ambassadors for JMU Golf."
Â
Montero, who goes by the nickname "Nacho," comes to JMU from Madrid, Spain, where he has tallied a long list of junior successes already. Last year, he won the under-18 Madrid Championship and finished runner-up in the under-25 division, while also taking home titles at the Copa Siero-Spain and Principado Asturias Championship. He also tied for 10th this year in the under-18 division of the Spanish International.
Â
"Nacho is one of the best junior players in Spain," Forbes said. "His talent and international experience will help our program progress forward."
Â
Ben Tucker will join the Dukes as a junior after competing for a season each at Southeastern University and New Mexico Junior College. As a freshman at SEU, Tucker helped lead the Fire to a third-place showing at The Sun Conference Championships, before competing at NAIA Nationals. At NMJC, he has already earned all-tournament team honors at a pair of tournaments, including a second-place showing at the McLennan Community College Invitational.
Â
"Ben is a proven player in collegiate golf already," Forbes said. "He's ready to step in and compete for this team right away."
Â
The Dukes' win at the Camden Collegiate Invite on October 23 closed out their fall season, which saw them post four top-fives as a team in just five tournaments. JMU will open its spring season, consisting of five tournaments prior to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships and possible post-season play, with the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Auburn in Opelika, Ala. from Sun. March 5-Tues. March 7.
