HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison softball outlasted Georgia Southern 12-7 to take the series opener Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Dukes moved to an overall record of 18-7 and improved to 3-1 in conference play. The Eagles fell to 11-15 and dropped to 1-3 in conference contests.

Freshman
Kylah Berry earned the win in the circle for the Dukes to improve to 6-0 on the season. Berry pitched five innings of work, striking out three batters, and not giving up a hit. Junior
Alissa Humphrey started in the circle and tossed two innings of work. Humphrey noted zero walks, two strikeouts and only allowed three hits.

The Dukes displayed a triumphant showing of 13 hits at the plate today. Freshman
KK Mathis led the way going 4-for-4 with four RBI's and scoring one run. Sophomore
Jasmine Hall followed Mathis with three hits, three runs, and one RBI while
Kylee Gleason added two hits and two runs.

Also adding a hit during today's victory were graduate students
Hannah Shifflett and
Hallie Hall, along with freshman
Bella Henzler.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgia Southern got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Janai Conklin sent a three-run home run over left field.
- JMU quickly responded in the bottom of the first inning when it added two runs to pull behind by just one.
- In the bottom of the second, Gleason reached on a fielder's choice to score Pinder which tied things at three.
- H. Hall and Shifflett broke things open in the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back home runs, giving JMU a four-run lead.
- Georgia Southern pulled within two runs in the top of the third inning.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Mathis plated Shifflett and H. Hall to push the lead back to 4 runs. Afterwards, Henzler singled to add two more runs to make the score 11-5.
- Mathis knocked in the final JMU run in the bottom of the fifth inning from an RBI single.

UP NEXT
The Dukes will square off against the Eagles an hour later than scheduled due to weather concerns tomorrow afternoon. First pitch will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 25 at Veterans Memorial Park.
