HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – A late comeback bid fell short as the James Madison baseball team fell to Hofstra in the series opener, 6-4, on Friday afternoon at University Field.

The Dukes fall to 26-21, 11-7 while the Pride is now 24-21, 13-9.

Redshirt senior Liam McDonnell started and tossed five innings, giving up a run and striking out three. Redshirt junior Kyle Novak led the team at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double.

How It Happened
In the second inning, the Dukes were able to take an early lead after redshirt junior Carson Bell led off with a walk and was followed by a single from redshirt sophomore Mason Dunaway. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Jason Schiavone then moved the pair of runners into scoring position before classmate Coleman Calabrese, making his first career start, singled in the two runners in for a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, Hofstra was able to get on the board with a sacrifice fly to make it a one run game. The Pride then took the lead in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on two singles, a ground out, and an error to go up 5-2. A sixth run was scored in the seventh for the Pride.

The Dukes began a comeback in the eighth inning, as freshman Fenwick Trimble led off with a walk. Bell then reached on a fielder's choice with Trimble moving to third on an error on the play. He then came in to score when Dunaway reached the next at bat on an error to make it 6-3. After Schiavone was hit by a pitch to load the bases, redshirt freshman Grant Painter then hit his first career RBI to change the score to 6-4.

A pair of strikeouts would end the threat though as Hofstra was able to escape the inning without allowing any more runs to hold on for the win. Mark Faello went six innings to earn the win for the Pride.

Game Notes

The Dukes put a runner on base in every inning of the game, except the ninth inning.
Kyle Novak recorded three hits for the fifth time this season, tallying his 17^th multi-hit game of the season.
