MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – James Madison baseball started off the weekend by dropping the series opener against College of Charleston, 6-3, on Friday evening at Patriots Point.
The Dukes fall to 17-11, 4-3 while the Cougars move to 17-12, 5-2.
Graduate student Justin Showalter started and went five innings, striking out three with no walks while giving up six runs, four of which were earned. Freshman Fenwick Trimble led the team hitting, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, a home run, and two RBI's.
How It Happened
Showalter allowed two baserunners through the first two innings, on a hit by pitch and a single. The Cougars then tagged him for three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
The Dukes responded in the top of the fourth as redshirt junior Kyle Novak led off the inning with a single before Trimble blasted his fourth home run of the season to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
A throwing error would begin the bottom of the fourth and saw Charleston put three additional runs on the scoreboard to take a 6-2 lead. Redshirt junior Carson Bell was able to get a run back for JMU in the sixth inning, taking the 2-0 pitch over the left center wall to make it 6-3.
Graduate student Anthony Piccolino came in for relief and kept the Charleston bats at bay with a season-high three scoreless innings. He allowed only a hit and struck out four to give the JMU bats a chance to get back in the game, but JMU wasn't able to get back on the board.
Ty Good went six innings on the mound to earn the win for Charleston.
