Late Game Comeback Not Enough as Dukes Fall on Second Straight Walk Off
4/10/2022 5:13:00 PM | Baseball
The Dukes drop to 17-14, 4-5 as the Cougars moved to 19-12, 7-2.
Sophomore Ryan Murphy started for JMU, tossing five innings with three strikeouts while giving up three runs, two earned. The team was led at the plate by freshman Fenwick Trimble, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. His three hits tied a season-high.
How It Happened
Charleston jumped to an early 1-0 lead, singling a run in in the first inning. It didn't take long for JMU to tie the game with their own single, as redshirt junior Nick Zona scored classmate Jensen Lapoint in the second. The Dukes managed to take the lead in the top of the fifth, as Zona led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error, and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of redshirt junior Trevon Dabney to lead 2-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Cougars retook their lead, 3-2, on back-to-back singles after they were able to get runners on the corners. The Dukes once again tied the game in the sixth, as redshirt junior Carson Bell led off with a walk and then went to third on an error by the pitcher. Lapoint then safety squeezed home Bell, and ended up on first with a single as there was no play at home and no one covering first base. Charleston got back in front with three runs in the home half of the inning to lead 6-3.
Sophomore Joe Vogatsky entered in the sixth to get the final out of the inning and was able to keep The College off the board in the seventh and eighth innings. The Dukes were able to mount their comeback, scoring a pair of runs in the eighth off back-to-back singles by Trimble and redshirt junior Travis Reifsnider. They then tied the game in the top of the ninth, as Zona placed a sacrifice bunt down and scored Bell, who led off with a walk.
The Cougars found a way in the bottom of the ninth for a second consecutive game however, knocking in the winning run on a single with one out. William Privette earned the win for The College.
Game Notes
