Eight Run Fourth Leads Dukes to Sweep of FDU
2/27/2022 5:56:00 PM | Baseball
Â
The Dukes have won four straight, moving to 4-3, while the Knights drop to 1-6. It is the first series sweep for JMU since Quinnipiac on Feb. 21-23, 2020.
Â
Sophomore Joe Vogatsky started and went five innings to earn his first career win, giving up three runs and scattering four hits while striking out three. Redshirt junior Trevon Dabney had a career-day at the plate to lead the Dukes offensively. Dabney went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a career-high six RBI's while recording his first career multi-home run game, as he hit a solo shot in the first and a grand slam in the fourth.
Â
How It Happened
Both teams scored a run in the first inning off of solo shots, with JMU adding two more runs in the third on redshirt junior Jensen Lapoint's solo home run and an FDU error to make it 3-1 through three.
Â
The Dukes then sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth, as they put an eight spot on the scoreboard. JMU scored six runs before recording the first out of the inning. Redshirt junior Carson Bell led off by drawing a walk and scored when redshirt sophomore Jacob Steinburg laced a double into left center. Classmate Mason Dunaway dropped a bunt perfectly to put runners on the corners before Steinberg scored on a wild pitch. JMU then loaded the bases on a walk and another bunt single before Dabney took the fourth pitch of his at bat the opposite way for a grand slam. A Travis Reifsnider RBI double and a wild pitch that would score him capped off the inning, with the JMU lead up to 11-1.
Â
FDU got a pair of runs back in the top of the fifth, but a Chase DeLauter RBI single in the bottom half of the inning and then a Dunaway two-run double in the sixth put the lead at 14-3.
Â
The Knights once again scored a pair of runs, this time in the eighth, but JMU responded with a run of their own in the inning. None other than Dabney would be hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score in the 15th run of the game to cap the 15-5 win and series sweep.
Â
