TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Fueled by a pair of five-run innings in the middle of the game by Florida State, James Madison dropped the middle game of the season-opening series, 13-2, on Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.

The Dukes fall to 0-2 while the 11th ranked Seminoles move to 2-0.

Redshirt sophomore Donovan Burke started for JMU and went four innings, scattering four hits and striking out 4 while giving up two runs with one earned. Redshirt junior Carson Bell led the Dukes offensively, going 1-for-3 with a home run.

How It Happened

Florida State struck first in the second inning, stringing together three straight singles to push two runs across for a 2-0 lead.

The Seminoles then put five runs on the board in both the fifth and sixth innings, led by a grand slam in the fifth and three doubles in the sixth. They would lead 12-0 heading into the seventh inning.

In the seventh, the Dukes used a pair of two-out hits to get on the board. Freshman Ryan Dooley recorded his first collegiate hit to start things off and was followed by Bell who took the second pitch he saw over the right field wall to make the score 12-2. Redshirt juniors Nick Zona and Trevon Dabney hit back-to-back singles afterwards, but a strikeout ended the threat of additional runs.

Florida State would add a run in the eighth and take the ball game, 13-2. Bryce Hubbart went five innings for the win, striking out 13.

Game Notes

Freshmen Ryan Dooley and Jason Schiavone both recorded their first collegiate hits.
Freshman Casey Smith recorded his first career strikeout.
Redshirt sophomore Chase DeLauter's 17-game hit streak came to an end, as well as his 25-game reached base streak.
