The 2011 Major League Soccer Rookie of the Year is off to a hot start in his third season with the Philadelphia Union. Through four games, Sapong leads the Union with three goals, accounting for 75 percent of its scoring this season. In a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC on March 11, he timed his run perfectly before receiving a through ball, beating the goalkeeper with a head fake and depositing the ball into the open net. Sapong also scored a well-placed header against Orlando City SC on March 18 and pounced on a rebound for a goal against DC United on April 1.
Sapong isn't just standing out on the field, he's trying to make a difference off of it. He and other board members have created Sacred Seeds, a nonprofit with the goal of spreading urban, self-sufficient greenhouses to produce healthy food for Philadelphia residents. For more info, visit
