ELON, N.C. - Two placements on the podium and a newly established school record highlighted day one of the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championships for the James Madison track & field program at the Jerry and Jeane Robertson Track & Field Complex on a rainy Friday.
Sophomore Tyrah Burrow dominated the field 26-athlete field in the 400-meter prelims by posting a personal record and JMU program record time of 54.44 seconds, making her the only competitor to post a sub-55 second time in the event. The performance also easily surpasses the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Outdoor Championships qualifying mark of 55.94 seconds.
After overcoming scratches on her first two attempts in the long jump prelims to move on to the finals with her third and final effort, junior Ebony Owusu-Sampah collected 10 points for JMU as she placed first in the long jump finals with a leap of 5.79 meters (19'0"). The Dukes also took home the gold medal in the event last season, with then-sophomore Kennedy King achieving a distance of 6.13 meters (20'1.50").
Also making her way to the podium was senior distance runner Kathleen Stewart, who capped her historic career against CAA competition with a second-place finish out of 21 runners in the 5,000-meter run thanks to a time of 16:38.02. The finish adds eight more points to the Dukes' total score.
As a team, James Madison sits in fourth out of eight teams heading in to day two of the conference championships with 31 points. The Dukes will have a representative in every track final scheduled to take place on day two of the meet. William & Mary currently leads the pack with 55 points.
Freshman Nikki Serratore contributed to the team score with a throw of 38.87 meters (127'6") in the javelin throw to place fourth out of 12 throwers, earning five points. The Lansdale, Pa. native has the opportunity to place in the heptahlon as well with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter left to go on Saturday.
Also making their way to Saturday's finals are sophomore Aereale Scott and junior Summer Walter in the 100-meter hurdles, junior Carol Strock and sophomore Erica Gray in the 1,500-meter run, sophomores Madeleine McCarty and Gray in the 800-meter run and Walter again in the 400-meter hurdles.
The final most packed with Dukes, however, is the 100-meter dash in which King, freshman Meredith Willis, junior Annie Johnson and Scott will run in.
JMU returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, May 7, at 10 a.m. when Serratore kicks things off with the heptathlon long jump. The day will conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 4:30 p.m.
