EUGENE, Ore. – James Madison men's golf junior Ryan Cole carded a 3-over par 73 in the first round of the 2016 Division I Men's Golf National Championships at the Par 70, 7,014-yard Eugene Country Club on Friday evening.
Cole, who entered the weekend as the top-seeded individual out of six qualify for the National Championships at their respective regional tournaments, sits tied for 72nd out of 156 golfers to keep him in contention as he heads into Saturday's second round. Birdies on two of three holes between holes eight and 10 were the highlight of the Mount Airy, Md. native's day.
Sitting in a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard is San Diego State's Nahum Mendoza III, South Carolina's Will Starke and Vanderbilt's Theo Humphrey at 3-under par. Arkansas and TCU lead the 30-team field at 2-over par, further emphasizing the challenge that the course presents to some of the nation's top golfers.
Alongside Will Rainey of College of Charleston and Antoine Rozner of Missouri – Kansas City, Cole will tee off at 9:12 a.m. (PT) or 12:12 p.m. (ET) on Saturday morning as he looks to fight his way back to the top of the field.
