KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Junior
Ryan Cole leads the field of 89 golfers after two rounds of play at the 2016 Cabarrus Country Irish Creek Collegiate at the Par 71, 7,099-yard Club at Irish Creek on Saturday.
Cole (-5, 1st) started the day strong, sinking six birdies to shoot a 4-under par 67 in the opening round before adding three more birdies in the second round where he carded a 1-under par 70. His 67 was the lowest score for the Mount Airy, Md. native since carding that score in back-to-back rounds at the 2016 Bash at the Beach Invitational en route to him winning the individual title.
Senior
Chris Kapsak (+4, T-20th) was called upon to represent the Dukes for the second straight tournament and turned in strong results. His day was highlighted by four birdies, as well as an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole, during the second round.
Overall, JMU (+14) sits in seventh place out of 16 teams heading into Sunday's final round. In a tournament which features five teams in the top-50 nationally according to Golfstat, Kennesaw State leads the field and is the only team under par at 1-under.
Rounding out the scoring for the Dukes were sophomore
Jack Floydd (+8, T-46th), sophomore
Matt Cowgill (+9, T-52nd) and redshirt freshman
Shota Ozaki (+11, T-64). Both Floydd and Ozaki moved double-digit places up the individual leaderboard from round one to round two.
The Dukes return to the course Sunday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
QUOTING COACH FORBES
"The guys played okay overall but we hope to come out firing tomorrow and make our way up the leaderboard. Ryan [Cole] played great considering the cold temperature and winds today."
