OXFORD, Miss. - The James Madison women's golf team sits in 12th following two rounds of play at the 2016 Rebel Intercollegiate at the Par-72, 6,323-yard Ole Miss Golf Course.
Freshman
Carley Cox (+24, T-87th) made the largest improvement of any Duke on Saturday, shaving six strokes off of her first-round 87 to card a 9-over 81 on the day.
Also improving her score was freshman
Jordan McKelvin (+11, T-43rd), who carded a team-best 3-over 75 on Saturday, due in part to back-to-back birdies on holes six and seven.
Even with the push from the freshmen, sophomores
Maddisen Cox (+6, T-15th) and
Laura Gomez-Ruiz (+8, T-23rd) lead the Dukes on the individual leaderboard, which features 90 student-athletes. Senior
Kelsey Solan (+20, T-82nd) rounds out the scoring for the Dukes.
As a team, James Madison shot a 25-over 313 in the round and now have a stroke total of 620 through two rounds.
"Today was a difficult day with the wind and greens speeding up," said head coach
Sarah Sargent. "We didn't handle the change in conditions like we should have, but that is part of having a young team. As we get a little more experience, we'll be able to adjust when needed. We will learn from today and are looking to do much better tomorrow."
Troy sits atop the team leaderboards after creating seperation to take a 20-stroke lead into Sunday's final round thanks to three individuals in the top-5. Murray State's Moa Folke (-5) has taken the top spot after shooting a three-under 68 on Saturday.
JMU's freshman
Katie Turk (+19, T-79th) is competing as an individual this weekend.
