SOUTHPORT, N.C. - The James Madison women's golf team completed the first round of the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at the Par-72, 6,066-yard St. James Plantation on Friday.
Freshmen Jordan McKelvin and Katie Turk lead the Dukes at 9-over par as they sit tied for 17th in the field of 40 individual golfers. Turk provided the most excitement on the day thanks to three birdies on holes nine, 14 and 16.
As a team, the Dukes are sixth out of eight teams at 40-over par and are just five strokes back of entering the top four.
Behind the strength of seven birdies on Friday, UNCW senior Meghan Theiss sits atop the individual leaderboard as the only golfer to stay under par at 1-under. Thanks in part to her effort, the Seahawks also hold the top spot on the team leaderboard heading into round two.
Freshman Carley Cox (+15, T-35th) rounds out the scoring for the Dukes.
James Madison returns to the course tomorrow morning for the second round of the CAA Championships as JMU looks to surge up the leaderboards.
