SORRENTO, Fla. - All six golfers carded scores in the 70's to place the James Madison women's golf team in ninth after the first round of the Morehead State University Citrus Spring Challenge on Sunday at the Par-72, 6,125-yard Red Tail Golf Club.
Playing her first tournament since finishing tied for fifth at the North Florida Collegiate and earning Colonial Athletic Association Golfer of the Week accolades, sophomoreÂ
Laura Gomez-Ruiz stayed even to the course and is tied for fifth place. SophomoreÂ
Maddisen Cox (+1, T-10th) is the second-leading JMU golfer behind Gomez-Ruiz and joined her in the top 10.Â
Jacksonville State's Valentine Giraldo (-7, 1st) leads the 118-golfer field, helping her team sit atop the team leaderboard in a tournament which features 20 teams from across the country.

Carley Cox (+5, T-58th) and
Katie Turk (+6, T-71st) and sophomoreÂ
Gabrielle Weiss (+7, T-77th) make up the rest of JMU's scorers. FreshmanÂ
Jordan McKelvin (+7, T-77th) also competed as an individual.
"Today was a good team day," Head CoachÂ
Sarah Sargent said. "Although this is an individual sport, sometimes you need to make a difference as a team and having all six players in the 70's is one step forward."
The Dukes will look to fight their way up the leaderboard on Monday when round two tees off at 8:30 a.m.
