Rob O'Driscoll joined the JMU staff soon after Matt Brady's hiring as head coach in March 2008 and serves as the associate head coach on the Dukes’ staff. He assists in all aspects of the JMU program’s organization and operation.
O’Driscoll was Brady's top assistant during each of the head coach’s four years (2004-08) at Marist, where he served as recruiting coordinator. He also was in charge of the team's scheduling and handled opponent scouting duties while at the New York school.
“Rob has been with me the entire time I’ve been a head coach and is a tremendous asset,” Brady said. “He’s very detail-oriented and incredibly thorough. He’s an outstanding coach and a lieutenant who keeps me on track.”
While at Marist, O’Driscoll helped the Red Foxes to a 73-50 record overall and to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season championship in 2006-07 when Brady was league and New York City area coach of the year. Marist that season also won at Oklahoma State in the post-season National Invitation Tournament.
Marist improved its victories total from the previous year during each of the first three seasons O’Driscoll assisted Brady there, and the Red Foxes were 18-14 in 2007-08 despite playing most of the second half of the season without their second-leading scorer. Their 2006-07 team was 25-9 and won the school’s MAAC regular-season championship before being invited to the NIT. Marist was 11-17 and 19-10 during Brady’s first two seasons after being 6-22 the year before his hiring.
Since joining Brady at JMU, standing out to O’Driscoll have been the support the JMU basketball program receives and the loyal following the university enjoys.
“The support starts with the administration and extends throughout the university,” he said. “Everyone around here, it seems, and throughout Virginia loves JMU. What I’ve noticed wherever I’ve been is the fan following and support from everyone in the administration, from the students and from the community.”
O'Driscoll went to Marist after six seasons as an Iona assistant under Jeff Ruland, and he helped the Gaels to MAAC titles in 1999-2000 and 2000-01. He worked from 1996-98 as an assistant at Manhattan under John Leonard.
The Philadelphia native began his coaching career in 1994 at Villanova, where he was administrative assistant under Steve Lappas for two seasons and helped the Wildcats to consecutive top-10 final national rankings.
As a college undergraduate, O’Driscoll lettered three times in tennis at Villanova and was a Big East Conference all-academic honoree. He received his under graduate degree in accounting and a master’s in business administration from Villanova in 1997.
O'Driscoll is married to the former Suzanne Lowry. They reside in Harrisonburg.
