As a sophomore: Redshirted 2009 after transferring from Virginia... invited to Cape Cod League for summer by the Brewster Whitecaps, but injuries prevented any game appearances.
Before JMU: Played for Tim Lowery and the Post 137 South Richmond American Legion team...played high school for the Clover Hill Cavaliers...junior year was named first-team all-district pitcher, second-team all-region pitcher, and second-team all-metro pitcher...named team M.V.P. junior year...senior year was named third-team All-American by Baseball America, Rawlings, and Perfect Game...was drafted in the 35th round by the Boston Red Sox... began his collegiate career at Virginia in 2008... appeared in two games for the Cavaliers (Coppin St., Cornell), throwing a total of 1 1/3 innings as a freshman.
Personal: Son of Karen and Donald Tierney...enjoys playing football and basketball, playing video games, and watching movies...marketing major.

Why did you choose JMU?
I chose JMU for the academics, the great atmosphere the school has, and the legacy the baseball team has built over the years.
What are your goals for the year?
Be the best teammate and team player that I can be
What is your major?
Business Marketing
What do you want to do after college?
I either want to play professional baseball, and if that cannot happen then I would like to be involved in professional baseball in any way possible.
What activities or hobbies do you enjoy other than baseball?
I like to watch sports a lot; I also enjoy playing video games and watching movies
Who was your baseball idol growing up?
Derek Jeter because he is a great role model on and off the field, and he always gives 100 percent.
What was your greatest baseball moment pre-college?
My senior year I struck out 17 in a 7 inning game that we won 2-0 in front of 25 professional scouts.
What influenced you the most in your decision to play baseball?
My parents played a big role in it and just watching some of my older friends growing up made me fall in love with the game.
Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?
I like to listen to my iPod and visualize how I am going to pitch and try to stay focused.
Do you have any superstitions when you’re on the field or in the dugout?
I do not step on the foul line on my way out to the mound.
What is one thing you would change about baseball?
Wooden bats in college.
