HARRISONBURG, Va., June 12, 2008 – Redshirt sophomore first baseman Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) became the latest James Madison University baseball player to turn pro on Thursday by agreeing to join the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.
Caseres was drafted by the Dodgers with the 277th overall pick in the ninth round on Friday, June 6 during the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He will be assigned to the Ogden Raptors in the Rookie level Pioneer League in Ogden, Utah. The team is scheduled to open the season Tuesday, June 17 at the Orem Owlz.
Caseres leaves JMU ranked eighth on the program’s career home run chart in just two seasons. In 2008, he hit .342 with 20 doubles, 21 home runs, 70 RBIs, and a .734 slugging percentage. He matched the JMU single-season record for extra-base hits and became just the second player in CAA history to post 20 doubles and 20 home runs in one season.
