NORFOLK, Va., March 23, 2008 – Senior Ryan Bergh (Reddick, Fla.) pitched a complete game to lead Old Dominion University to a 6-2 win over James Madison University in the Colonial Athletic Association series finale on Sunday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Complex.

ODU improved to 12-10 overall and 5-4 in the CAA, winning the three-game set two games to one.  JMU dropped to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in league play.  The Dukes dropped consecutive games for the first time this season and have lost three of their last four following a 10-game winning streak.  JMU also lost its first series of the season after four consecutive weekend wins.

Bergh, who took the loss in JMU’s comeback win Friday night, survived a shaky start to go all nine innings for his first complete game of the season.  He allowed two runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts while improving to 2-2.

Sophomore Kyle Hoffman (Reading, Pa./Twin Valley) lost for the first time this season, falling to 3-1.  He allowed all six runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings while also matching his career high with nine strikeouts.

Junior Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) paced the ODU offense with a 3-for-4 performances with an RBI and two runs scored.  Senior Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) drove in a pair of runs.

Junior Brett Garner (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) was 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Sophomore Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) had two hits.  Redshirt junior Brett Sellers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) saw his 16-game hitting streak come to an end.

JMU let an opportunity slip away in the first inning when two runners reached on errors by the second baseman along with a single by redshirt senior Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) loaded the bases with no outs.  Redshirt sophomore Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) then hit a sharp line drive to left field that floated through the air long enough for the left fielder to snag it.  Expecting the ball to fall, the runner on second was doubled up.  Sophomore Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) followed with a popup to end the inning without a run scoring.

JMU jumped on the board in the second inning.  After redshirt junior Lee Bujakowski (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) and Garner reached on consecutive one-out singles, sophomore Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) singled down the right field line to drive in a run.  The second run was scored by Garner on a wild pitch.

In the ODU second, Shawler led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out.  Freshman Edgar Hernandez (Luguillo, P.R.) then laced a double down the line in left field for the RBI.  In the fourth, a two-run single by Cipolla gave ODU its first lead, 3-2.

The Monarchs added a run in the sixth when Shawler led off with a single.  He moved to second on a groundout and came around to score on a two-out double to left by sophomore Chris Buss (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount).  Sophomore Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) followed with another double to left for a 5-2 ODU lead.  An RBI single by Shawler in the seventh made it 6-2.

JMU will be back at home Tuesday against Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. and again Wednesday for a rescheduled game against VMI at 3 p.m.  Tuesday’s game will have a free live video broadcast on MadiZONE.  The Dukes take to the road again next weekend in CAA play at Hofstra.
