Godwin Hall is the hub of JMU's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The facility includes Sinclair Gymnasium, home to Women's Volleyball, as well as Savage Natatorium, which hosts Swimming and Diving. Godwin Hall is also home to offices for JMU's athletics administration as well as locker rooms and offices for several sports programs.
The building was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly when Mills E. Godwin, Jr. was governor. It was completed in 1972 and named for the governor and his wife, Katherine, a JMU graduate. Sinclair Gymnasium offers seating for 5,000 and was named after Caroline Sinclair, former department head in physical and health education. Savage Natatorium, an Olympic-sized pool with seats for 800 spectators, was named for Dorothy L. Savage, a former physical education teacher.
