RICHMOND, Va., June 19, 2013 – James Madison women’s tennis senior Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and track & field senior Katie Gorman (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) each earned the distinction of Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete for their respective sports, the conference announced today.

One Scholar-Athlete is honored by the league for each of its 22 championship sports, and 11 were awarded to honor spring sports.  To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve on the team and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25.  Winners were voted on by the sports information directors at each CAA institution.

In May 2013, Bulling graduated summa cum laude (3.9+) with a bachelor’s degree in English and was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Third Team.  She tallied back-to-back JMU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors (2012, 2013) and was a three-time International Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete.

Bulling’s 18-8 singles record during her senior campaign garnered All-CAA Third Team accolades while her 12-4 doubles record earned All-CAA Second Team honors.

This is the second conference scholar-athlete for Gorman as she picked up the honor for cross country in the fall.  She graduated magna cum laude (3.700-3.899) with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology this spring and was selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District First Team.  She was a four-time President’s List (3.9+) honoree and a finalist for the 2013 JMU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

During the indoor track & field season, Gorman set a facility record at the Navy Indoor Invitational for the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:55.71.  For the outdoor season, she notched her third all-conference honor with a third-place finish in the 10,000-meter run.
