Volleyball’s Kleespies to Participate in USA National Team Open Tryout

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 19, 2014 – James Madison volleyball sophomore libero MacKenzie Kleespies (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) is participating in a USA Women’s Volleyball Team and U.S. Collegiate National Team open tryout this weekend. The tryout takes place in Colorado Springs, Colo., from Friday, Feb. 21 through Sunday, Feb. 23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Kleespies is one of 248 athletes from 106 colleges anticipated to participate. Among the 248 participants are 63 liberos, 61 middle blockers, 61 outside hitters, 36 setters and 27 opposites.

“MacKenzie has worked extremely hard to be the player she is today,” head coach Lauren Steinbrecher said. “I am excited for her to have the opportunity to train with the best players in the country this weekend. I have no doubt that Kenzie will make us proud and represent JMU Volleyball well.”

In 2013, Kleespies started all 28 matches either at outside hitter or libero. She finished the season with 443 digs, the sixth-highest single-season total in program history, averaging 3.99 digs per set. She added 139 kills 86 assists, 19 aces and 18 blocks.

The 27 athletes who have already completed their collegiate eligibility will be evaluated for potential spots on the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team. Athletes with remaining collegiate eligibility will be evaluated for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team as well as the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program
