Swimming & Diving’s Helfrich a Finalist For JMU Female Athlete of the Year

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2012 – James Madison swimming and diving’s Kimberly Helfrich (Fort Belvoir, Va./West Springfield) was a finalist for JMU’s 2011-12 Female Athlete of the Year Award. 

The award winners and finalists were recognized Monday evening at the annual JMU student-athlete awards banquet. 

Helfrich was the 2010-11 Colonial Athletic Association Diver of the Year after becoming the first athlete in team history to advance to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. She finished 24th in the country on the one-meter and 28th on the three-meter board. In 2011-12 she was the CAA Champion in the three-meter event, scoring a 324.70 to help lead the Dukes to their first conference championship since 2001. 

Twice during the season Helfrich garnered CAA Diver of the Week Accolades and she recorded three first-place finishes in the one-meter event and four firsts in the three-meter event. 

Cross Country’s Katie Harman was recognized as the Female Athlete of the Year. Track and field’s Alison Parris and volleyball’s Natalie Abel were the other finalists.
