FAIRFAX, Va., Feb. 22, 2012 – Junior Kimberly Helfrich (Fort Belvoir, Va./West Springfield) became the third James Madison diver in program history to win the individual championship on the three-meter board as JMU jumped out to an early lead on day one of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships in Fairfax, Va., on Wednesday.
The Dukes placed three divers in the top four and four in the top seven at Jim McKay Natatorium to score 69 points after just one event. Four-time defending conference champion Towson is second with 55 points followed by Old Dominion in third with 11 points. George Mason (eight points) is fourth with Northeastern (seven) and UNC Wilmington (six) in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Helfrich scored a 324.70 to beat out senior Nicole Jotso (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) by more than 13 points for the fourth three-meter championships in program history. Jotso, the 2011 three-meter champion, scored a 310.95 to take second.
Freshman Alex Savage (Carrolton, Texas/Lewisville Hebron) scored a 290.00 in her first conference championship action to take fourth with sophomore Emma Brown (Beverly Hills, Mich./Wylie E. Groves) taking seventh with a 242.90.
Senior Chelsea Savage (Bedford, Texas/L.D. Bell) rounded out the day’s scoring for the Dukes with a 242.85 in the consolation round to finish in 12th.
The 2012 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships continue on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle. Teams will also compete in the 200-yard individual medley, the 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay on Thursday.
