AUSTIN, Texas, March 18, 2011 – James Madison sophomore diver Kimberly Helfrich (Fort Belvoir, Va./West Springfield) finished 28th in the three-meter board at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Tex., Friday.
The NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships are being held this weekend at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas.
Helfrich recorded a score of 273.70 during preliminaries of the three-meter to finish 28th of 37 divers.
The sophomore from Fort Belvoir, Va., is the first member of the JMU swimming and diving team to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Duke’s Abby Johnson won the event with a score of 409.35. She edged out Minnesota’s Kelci Bryant who finished second with a 395.85. Erin Mertz of Purdue finished third with a 373.90 followed by Bianca Alvarez (351.65) of Ohio State in fourth and Florida’s Monica Dodson (350.85) in fifth. Miami’s Carrie Dragland (347.95), Texas's Shelby Cullinan (345.50) and Maren Taylor (334.20) rounded out the top eight.
