HARRISONBURG, Va., March 16, 2011 – James Madison sophomore diver Kimberly Helfrich (Fort Belvoir, Va./West Springfield) will be the first member of the JMU swimming and diving team to participate in the NCAA Championships as she travels to Austin, Texas, for the three-day event this weekend.
Helfrich qualified for the event by finishing in the top five in both the three-meter and one-meter boards at the NCAA Zone A Championships in Annapolis, Md. last weekend. She finished third in the three-meter with a score of 554.80 while taking fifth in the one-meter with a 474.40.
The Fort Belvoir, Va. native is the school record holder in the three-meter dive, setting the mark this year with a 377.70 in a double-dual meet against Towson and Loyola (Md.). It was the highest score in that event in the Colonial Athletic Association all year.
She was a three-time winner of the CAA Diver of the Week award, garnering the award in back-to-back-to-back weeks in January. At the CAA Championships Helfrich finished in the top four in both events to help the Dukes jump out to an early lead in the event.
The NCAA Championships are being held March 17-19 in the Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas. Preliminaries for the one-meter event are scheduled for Thursday, March 17, at 1:30 p.m. with finals taking place that evening. The three-meter prelims will be held on Friday, March 18, also at 1:30 with finals taking place in the evening.
Live scoring of the diving events will be available on divemeets.com.
