CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 14, 2014 – The James Madison swimming and diving team sits in third place after one day at the Cavalier Invitational being held at the UVA Aquatics and Fitness Center this weekend.
The Dukes total 183 points to trail first-place Virginia (274 points) and William & Mary (213 points) in the standings. Pennsylvania (138 points) is in fourth with Duke (40) rounding out the five-team field.
Junior Aimee Hooper (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) placed second in the 200-yard individual medley to lead the way for the Dukes on Friday. She touched the wall in a time of 2:11.91 while senior Addy Morrison (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) came in third with a time of 2:14.69.
The Dukes also had three of the top five finishers in the 100-yard breaststroke as freshman Emma Richer (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) placed second in a time of 1:05.04. Senior Mary Gargula (Richmond, Va./James River) came in third with a time of 1:05.36 while freshman Maddy Murphy (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) claimed fifth (1:07.09).
In the 200-yard backstroke it was sophomore Jackie Crawford (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring), freshman Jennifer Vieni (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) and freshman Nina Tremols (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) placing fifth, sixth and seventh. Crawford time the event in 2:05.15 to edge Vieni at 2:07.06 while Tremols completed the race at 2:14.59.
Sophomore Ashley Clark (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) was the top Duke in the 100-yard freestyle. She touched the wall at 52.15 while Vieni won the “B” final in a time of 53.10.
Freshman Claire Adkins (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle) swam the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:03.19 to place sixth.
The Dukes wrap up the Cavalier Invitational on Saturday with prelims starting at 9 a.m. and finals beginning at 5 p.m.
