WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 6, 2013 – The James Madison field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-0 setback at American on Friday afternoon.

The Dukes fell to 2-1 on the season while the Eagles improved to 2-1.

JMU kept American from taking a shot the first 21 minutes of the game, but the Eagles’ Isabel Terwindt tapped in a goal off a drive by teammate Shelly Montgomery to give American a 1-0 lead.  The Dukes fired off three shots in the first half, including one off a corner, but were unable to find the net.

Entering the second half, the Dukes continued to fight as sophomore goalkeeper Lena Wimmert (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Lise-Meitner Gymnasium) made a quick save following a penalty corner to preserve the 1-0 score.  JMU was unable to connect on two of their own penalty corners, allowing both teams to continue battling.  With 20 minutes remaining in the game, American connected off a save rebound to take the 2-0 lead.

Wimmert dropped to 1-1 this season after allowing two goals and committing four saves.  American’s Ashley Dalisera improved to 2-1, saving seven shots on goal.

JMU outshot American 9-8, including six on-goal in the second half.  The Dukes were also awarded more corners than the Eagles (6-4).  Redshirt sophomore Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke) and sophomore Loes Stijntjes (Steenokkerzeel, Belgium/Heilig Hartcollege) each accounted for three shots on the day.

JMU returns to action at Jacobs Field on Sunday, September 8, when the Dukes take on Columbia at 1 p.m. in a neutral site match.
