HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 14, 2013 -- Coming off a historic first season and heading into his second school year as the James Madison softball coach, Mickey Dean is bringing in a large freshman class. The Dukes have 13 new players joining the roster this fall.
Over the next week, the team will announce a handful of players each day. Today’s newcomers are catcher/utility Sarah Winn (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) and catcher Caitlin Viafora (Stanley, Va./Page County).
Winn comes to JMU from John Randolph Tucker High School in Richmond, Va. As a senior, she led her team with a .473 batting average on her way to being named First Team All-Colonial District, and honorable mention All-Region. She is a four-year letterwinner also picking up Second Team All-Colonial District as a junior in 2012. She received Academic All-District and All-Region for both softball and field hockey. In addition to softball and field hockey, Winn also played basketball at J.R. Tucker. She played club softball for the West End Waves.
Viafora joins the Dukes out of Stanley, Va. where she played at Page County High School. She is a First Team All-District and All-Region selection as a senior. She is a four-year letterwinner, earning All-District and All-Region three times. Viafora helped lead Page County to the Regionals three times, including a Region B semifinal appearance in 2013.
