HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 12, 2013 -- Coming off a historic first season and heading into his second school year as the James Madison softball coach, Mickey Dean is bringing in a large freshman class. The Dukes have 13 new players joining the roster this fall.
Over the next week, the team will announce a handful of players each day. Today’s newcomers are first baseman Sara Wright (Pulaski, Va./Pulaski County) and utility player Niki Prince (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge).
Wright comes to JMU out of Pulaski County High School in Dublin, Va. She was a Second Team All-State honoree as well as the River Ridge District and Timesland Player of the Year in 2013. She is a two-time First Team All-Region IV selection and a four-time All-River Ridge District honoree. As a senior, she set the school record for career home runs. She was selected to play in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star game.
As a junior, Wright set school records for single-season home runs (10), slugging percentage (1.073), hits (32), on-base percentage (.657) and batting average (.527).
Prince played at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Va. She was the Virginia State Player of the Year and First Team All-State after hitting .667 with 12 home runs, 47 RBIs, 65 runs and 32 steals as a senior. In addition, she was the Virginia Northern Region and the Liberty District Player of the Year. The Washington Post named her First Team All-Met and she participated with Wright in the VHSCA All-Star Game.
Prince was also First Team All-State and the Northern Region Player of the Year as a junior after batting .649 with five home runs, 18 doubles, 30 RBIs and 47 runs.
