Softball’s Burnham a Finalist For JMU Female Athlete of the Year

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 22, 2013 – James Madison softball’s Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) was a finalist for JMU’s 2012-13 Female Athlete of the Year Award.

The award winners and finalists were recognized Monday evening at the annual JMU student-athlete awards banquet.

Burnham, a four-year starter at shortstop for the Dukes, was the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year. She became the first player in CAA history to be a two-time winner of the league’s Player of the Year award after also winning the award in 2010. She was a NFCA Second Team All-Region selection and a First Team All-CAA honoree after hitting .335 with 11 home runs, 42 RBIs and 38 runs scored. She became the first player in school history to be a three-time First Team All-CAA selection and All-Region selection. She was one of 30 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award, a VaSID Second Team All-State winner and ECAC Second Team All-Star.

Burnham graduated as the program’s all-time leader in consecutive games started (209), home runs (35), RBIs (120), doubles (43) and assists (512). She also set single-season record in home runs (13), on-base percentage (.452), slugging percentage (.724) and assists (152).

Academically, she was a JMU Athletic Director Scholar-Athlete and a CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award Recipient.

Swimming and diving’s Eva Hannesdottir was recognized as the Female Athlete of the Year. Cross country and track and field’s Katie Harman and lacrosse’s Casey Ancarrow were the other finalist.
