HARRISONBURG, Va., June 22, 2012 – Freshman pitcher/designated player Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) was named First Team Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State while five of her teams were named to the Second Team.

Joining Mooney with All-State honors were senior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers), junior first baseman Haley Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run), sophomore third baseman Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt), freshman outfielder Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and freshman pitcher Heather Kiefer (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls).

Mooney adds All-State honors to her Second Team All-CAA, CAA All-Rookie and NFCA Second Team All-Region honors. She finished the season hitting .322 with a .372 on-base percentage and a .557 slugging percentage. She added 25 runs, eight doubles, nine home runs, 29 RBIs, 11 walks and five steals. Her nine home runs is tied for the fourth-most in JMU history and is the second-highest total by a freshman. She also set a new school record for RBIs by a freshman with 29. Mooney is just the second player in school history, joining outfielder Lauren Curtis (2003) to be named First Team All-State as a freshman.

Burnham earned her third All-State honor, adding this year’s Second Team recognition to a First Team honor in 2011 and a Second selection in 2010. She is the only player in school history to garner VaSID recognitions three times. She was the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, becoming the first player in conference history to earn that honor twice and was the first player in school history to earn First Team All-CAA recognitions three times. She set school records in consecutive games started, home runs, doubles, RBIs, total bases and assists and also owns single-season records in home runs, slugging percentage and assists.

Sandy earned her second consecutive VaSID second team honor after hitting .293 with 11 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 26 runs and 14 RBIs. She also played outstanding defense at third, committing just eight errors in 176 opportunities for a .957 fielding percentage.

Heath and Kiefer were both First Team All-CAA and All-Rookie selections. Kiefer added CAA Rookie of the Year honors after going 14-6 with a 1.96 ERA in the circle. She added 15 complete games, five shutouts and 95 strikeouts in 143 innings pitched. Heath led the team in hitting with a .355 average, adding 11 doubles, two home runs, 33 runs and 14 RBIs.

Mooney, Heath and Kiefer join Curtis, Sandy and junior outfielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) as the only freshman in school history to be named to either of VaSID’s All-State teams.

Johnson collected her first VaSID honor after hitting .310 with seven doubles, four home runs, 14 runs and 34 RBIs. She was named to the CAA All-Tournament team after going 5-for-10 with a home run in three games started.

Radford’s Nichole Beall was named the State Player of the Year while Virginia Tech collected the other three major awards. Jasmine Harrell was named the Pitcher of the Year and Lauren Gaskill the Rookie of the Year while head coach Scot Thomas was a unanimous pick as the Coach of the Year.
