RICHMOND, Va., April 16, 2012 – James Madison softball freshman designated player/pitcher Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday.
This is the second time this season that Mooney has won the award and the seventh time overall a JMU player has earned the honor. Mooney is joined by fellow rookies in outfielder Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and pitcher Heather Kiefer (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls) in earning the award. Heath has been named Rookie of the Week three times while Kiefer has claimed it twice.
Mooney garnered the honor on Monday after helping lead JMU to a 4-1 record last week, including taking two of three in a series against Delaware. Mooney hit .500 (7-for-14) at the plate, adding two home runs, five runs, four RBIs and two walks. She posted a .929 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage, hitting safely in all five games during the week. In game two of the doubleheader against Elon, Mooney went 3-for-3 with a home run to help spark a 7-0 Madison win.
In the circle, the rookie right-hander went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. In three appearances, Mooney threw 12 2/3 innings, limiting opponents to nine hits and six walks while striking out seven. She had one shutout and combined with junior Cara Stecher (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy) for another. Opponents hit just .205 off of her.
Hofstra’s Olivia Galati earned CAA Pitcher and Player of the Week. She shared the Player of the Week accolade with Georgia State’s Christy Ashley while Mooney shared Rookie of the Week honors with Towson’s Hailey Balk.
JMU returns to the field on Wednesday in Lynchburg, Va., for a non-conference doubleheader at Liberty beginning at 2 p.m. Next weekend, the Dukes return to CAA play by hosting Hofstra at Veterans Memorial Park for a three-game series.
