STARKVILLE, Miss., May 19, 2011 – Junior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and sophomore center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) were named Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Northeast Region as announced by the NFCA on Thursday. Burnham was a First Team selection while Butler took home Second Team honors.
Burnham became the first player in school history to become a two-time All-Region selection after collecting a Second Team recognition in 2010. She was named First Team All-CAA after hitting .365 with 44 runs, 32 RBIs and 26 walks while starting all 52 games. She added 12 doubles, five triples and a school-record 13 home runs for a .724 slugging percentage. The Danvers, Mass., native had 11 steals and three sacrifice bunts and recorded 89 putouts and 125 assists in the field for a .955 fielding percentage.
Butler adds Second Team All-Region to her Second Team All-CAA selection in 2011. She led the conference with a .371 average while adding 34 runs, 23 RBIs and 12 walks. The sophomore left-hander had five doubles, two triples, one home run, 19 steals, three sacrifice bunts and one sacrifice fly for Madison. Her 19 steals is the second-most in school history for a single season while her 16 game hitting streak is the second-longest in school history. In conference play, Butler hit .413 with 13 runs, two doubles, one triple, one home run and 12 RBIs.
The Dukes have had eight All-Regions selections since the program started in 2006. Burnham joins Jenny Clohan (2006-09) as the only players to be named to the First Team.
Harvard led all schools with five honorees, followed by Hofstra and Boston with three apiece. JMU, St. Joseph’s, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac all tied for third with two players named All-Region.
The NFCA honored 258 athletes from 126 institutions from 10 different regions. The All-Region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second and third teams.
