PITTSBURGH, Pa., Jan. 25, 2013- The James Madison men's tennis team fell 4-3 to Duquesne on Friday afternoon at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh. JMU claimed the first three singles points after falling in doubles competition, but Duquesne rallied to win the final three singles matches and earn the victory.
Coming down to the final match of the day, senior Bastien Russo (Lyon, France/Notre Dame des Minimes (Shorter)) took a quick lead over Duquesne's Harry Walshe as he claimed a 7-5 win in set one. Walshe countered in set two, earning his own 7-5 victory to tie the match, and sealed the victory for Duquesne with a 6-3 victory in set three.
Senior Greg Vladimirsky (Staten Island, N.Y./Broward Virtual) got the day started for the Dukes when he downed Duquesne's Corey Robinson 6-4, 6-2 to even the point total at 1-1. His doubles partner, senior Hugo Ramadier (Paris, France/Lycee Francais Chateabriand (Northern Arizona)) quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Rich Robbie (DU) and senior Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)) gave the Dukes a 3-1 advantage when Pete Carpenter retired in the third set of their dual.
Duquesne's Max Rubin answered by defeating senior Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier (Auburn Montgomery)) 6-4, 6-4. The match was left knotted at 3-3 after Alex Aleman won a two-set battle with freshman Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) 7-6, 7-6.
JMU takes a two-week hiatus before the Dukes head to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on No. 18 North Carolina on Sat., Feb. 9. Match-play is set to begin at 5 p.m.
