HARRISONBURG, Va., April 23, 2012 -- For the second time in the last three years the JMU lacrosse team has won the JMU Athletics' community service award.
The Dukes received the Exemplary Community Service Award at the fourth annual JMU Athletics Recognition Banquet held Monday night.
The team's community service activities included writing letters to soldiers abroad, donating 131 pounds of food to the Blue Ridge Food Bank and "adopting" a family of three for Christmas, providing the family with gifts and toiletries.
The team also became involved with the "Friends of Jaclyn" program and adopted nine-year-old Elle Howdershell, who is fighting a brain tumor. The entire team has kept in contact with Elle via blog posts since May 2011 and also visited her in her hometown of Gainesville, Va.
The lacrosse team also received the community service award in 2010.
