HARRISONBURG, Va., March 31, 2012 - The James Madison lacrosse team downed George Mason 16-6 in Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday. The Dukes trailed 3-2 early in the first half, but ended on an 8-0 run to take a 10-3 lead to halftime. Redshirt junior Casey Ancarrow (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) led the Dukes with five goals and an assist while senior Monica Zabel (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) added a goal and five assists.
George Mason got on the board first on an unassisted goal by senior Emily Ellisen (Paoli, Pa./Great Valley), but JMU answered with two straight of their own. Senior Ashley Kimener (Oakton, Va./Oakton) notched her 12th of the season and Ancarrow notched her 24th less than two minutes later, both goals were assisted by Zabel.
The Patriots responded with two straight scores. Sophomore Rachel Obregon (Fairfax Station, Va./W.T. Woodson) knotted the game at two with 18:31 to play in the first, and Ellisen notched her second of the game just under four minutes later, giving the Patriots a 3-2 lead.
Madison responded in serious fashion, ending the first half on an 8-0 run. Kimener go things started with her second of the game with 13:06 to go. Ancarrow followed less than a minute later, netting two in a row in just over three minutes of game time. Zabel, senior Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy), and sophomore Amy Roguski (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) each notched goals for JMU while Zabel also added her third assist of the game to send the Dukes to halftime, leading 10-3.
Following the break, JMU continued its tear. The Dukes netted the first six goals of the half over a span of 17:10 to build a 16-3 lead. Five different Dukes scored during the second half run, including redshirt freshman Emily Rhoads' (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes) first of her career.
Mason ended the game with a short 3-0 burst while the Dukes' head coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe took the opportunity to get her bench players some game experience. Sophomore Anna Kopecka (Prague, Czech Republic/T.C. Williams, senior Kara Bowman (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) and Ellisen each scored for the Patriots.
For the Dukes, McHugh had four draw controls, while Ancarrow scooped up three groundballs and senior Cally Chakrian (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) had a game high three caused turnovers. In goal, freshman Schylar Healy (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) stopped four shots in 40 minutes of play and redshirt senior Alex Menghetti (Media, Pa./Penncrest) knocked one away in 20 minutes of relief action.
The Patriots were led by Ellisen's three goals and game-high five draw controls. Bowman added two caused turnovers for GMU and sophomore goalkeeper Katie Teague (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) made nine saves and scooped up a game-high four groundballs.
Madison returns to action Friday, April 6, hosting CAA foe Hofstra. The Dukes and the Pride are scheduled for a 5 p.m. meeting at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
