BALTIMORE, Md., Feb. 23, 2014 – Playing away from its home courts for the fifth straight match to open the season, James Madison fell 6-1 to UMBC in non-conference men’s tennis action Saturday.
Freshman Sebastian Salinas picked up the lone singles victory for the Dukes, edging Alex Drean in three sets at No. 1 singles. Salinas took an early advantage with a 6-2 victory in the first set. He dropped the second set 6-4, but bounced back to clinch the match with a 6-1 win in the final set.
The Dukes also won at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Miljan Ruzic and sophomore Robert Stirling topped UMBC’s Melker Svard and Blyik Akinshemoyin 8-5. Including the end of the fall season when the duo won the Elon Invitational title, Ruzic and Stirling have won five of their past six doubles matches.
James Madison dropped to 2-3 overall with the loss, while UMBC improved to 4-3.
The Dukes will play a pair of matches in Blacksburg, Va. on Tuesday. They are scheduled to take on St. Bonaventure at 9 a.m. and host Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. The team will play its first home match against Duquesne on Thursday, March 6.
