FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - In the spring opening tournament, the James Madison women's golf team is currently sixth after the first two rounds of the JU Amelia Island Collegiate, Feb. 17. Hosted by Jacksonville University, the two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the Amelia National Golf Club (Par 72 - 6,029 yards) in Fernandina Beach, Fla.
In the morning round, the Dukes posted a 7-over 295 to finish in a tie for third. However, JMU slipped five shots in the afternoon to 12-over 300 and is currently in sixth at 19-over 595. Florida International has blistered the course in the first 36 holes, posting two under-par rounds and is currently at 17-under 559. Kennesaw State dropped eight shots in the afternoon and moved up to second at 4-under 572. Host Jacksonville and Daytona State College are tied for third at 13-over 589, with Winthrop rounding out the top five teams at 18-over 594.
Senior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) is the individual leader for Madison in a tie for 10th at 2-over 146. Mak rallied after a morning 6-over 78 to a 4-under 68 in the afternoon, which included five birdies and just one bogey. Freshman Nicola Haynes (Newcastle-Upon-Tyle, England ) is one shot back at 3-over 147, tied for 14th. Haynes was the top Duke in the opening round at 2-under 70. Junior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) is next in a tie for 21st at 5-over 149, including an even-par 72 in the first 18. Junior Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) is tied for 37th at 9-over 153, with sophomore Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) the final JMU player, currently tied for 65th at 20-over 164.
Camila Serrano of Florida International is the current individual leader at 11-under 133, four shots ahead of Daytona State’s Tiffany Chan at 7-under 137. Serrano posted rounds of 5-under 67 and 6-under 66 in earning the lead.
The final round will go off in a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., with JMU playing with Daytona State and Winthrop starting on holes 4-7.
