HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 22, 2013 – The James Madison men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with visiting Stetson in a non-conference game Sunday at University Park.

JMU goalie Kyle Morton (West Chester, Pa./Reed Henderson) had the play of the game for the Dukes, making a diving stop on a penalty kick attempt to prevent Stetson from taking a 2-1 lead late in the game. The sophomore has stopped both of the penalty kicks he has faced this season

After a scoreless first half, the Dukes took a 1-0 lead on an own goal in the 62nd minute. A Stetson player attempted to intercept a cross by JMU sophomore Tom Fouhy (Buckinghamshire, England/Dr. Challoner’s) and inadvertently deflected it into the goal.

JMU held the one-goal lead until the 82nd minute, when Justin Shirah received a cross from Steven Saballos and finished to the back post to tie the game.

It was the first tie of the season for the Dukes, who moved to 3-2-1. The Hatters are now 1-4-2, following the first ever meeting between the two teams.

Morton made four saves for JMU, while Stetson goalie Andreas Schnabl stopped six of the seven shots he faced. The Dukes finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots.

Sunday’s game was the first of five straight home contests for JMU. The Dukes will host Furman in a non-conference game on Friday at 7 p.m.
