Harrisonburg, Va, Sept. 7, 2013 – Senior Mahdi Ali broke a scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the 77th minute as UNCG beat James Madison 1-0 in a non-conference men’s soccer game Saturday night at University Park.

With the goalie screened by players in front of the net, Ali took advantage with a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off a JMU player and past the goalie, helping the Spartans improve to 3-0-0 on the season. The Dukes fell to 2-1-0.

JMU put pressure on UNCG in the final eight minutes, keeping the ball in its opponent’s territory while getting numerous good looks at a potential game-tying goal.

The Dukes’ best opportunity came with a minute left. Josh Grant, the team’s top returning scorer, made a nice attempt in front of the net only to be stopped by Stephen Moffitt’s diving save.

The Spartans, who knocked off No. 15 Charlotte on Tuesday, have yet to allow a goal in their three wins. Moffitt has posted all three shut outs.

Kyle Morton made four saves in a losing effort for the Dukes, suffering his first loss of the season.

The teams played evenly throughout the game, with the Spartans out-shooting the Dukes 14-11. The Spartans also held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, while the teams both finished with four corners.

JMU will host VMI at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. It will be the Dukes fourth consecutive home game to open the season.
