SOUTHPORT, N.C. - The James Madison women's golf team is fourth after the first 18 holes of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship, April 19. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at the The Reserve Club at St. James Plantation (Par 72 - 6,066 yards) in Southport, N.C.

In challenging conditions, the Dukes posted a 33-over 321 in the opening round to sit in fourth place, just eight shots behind opening-round leader Xavier at 25-over 313. Delaware is second at 28-over 316, with Richmond in third at 29-over 317. William & Mary trails JMU by nine shots in fifth at 42-over 330, with UNCW in sixth at 44-over 332. Dayton (341), Towson (342) and Hofstra (348) round out the teams in the event.

Madison is led by sophomore Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield), who posted a 4-over 76 and is currently in third. Brewer was five over through 10 holes but made two birdies and one bogey in the final eight holes, including a tournament-rare birdie on No. 18, to post her score. Sophomore Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) is next at 7-over 79 in seventh, with fellow sophomore Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) tied for 19th at 10-over 82. Junior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) is currently tied for 27th at 12-over 84, with freshman Karishma Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) completing the team scores at 16-over 88, tied for 37th.

Richmond's Tracy Martin is the opening-round leader at 2-over 74, one shot ahead of Shane Crutchfield of Xavier and two better than Brewer. The tournament average for the opening round was 83.40 strokes per round, with no hole playing under par and two playing more than a stroke over par on average.

Madison will play the second round with William & Mary and UNCW on Saturday, April 20.
