HARRISONBURG, Va., March 18, 2013 -- The James Madison women's basketball team will host North Carolina A&T in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Thursday, March 21.

The Dukes earned the Colonial Athletic Association's automatic berth in the WNIT.  JMU received the automatic qualification for the WNIT as the second-place team in the CAA's regular-season standings.  The WNIT includes each conference's highest-finishing team in the regular season that does not advance to the NCAA Tournament.  (CAA champion and first-place regular-season finisher Delaware received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.)

North Carolina A&T has a 22-9 record and finished second behind Hampton in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season standings with a 13-3 record.  The Aggies lost 55-42 to third-seeded Howard in the league semifinals on March 15.  Howard went on to lose 59-38 to Hampton in the MEAC title game.  First-year head coach Tarrell Robinson was an assistant coach at former CAA member Virginia Commonwealth for the previous three seasons.

Ticket Prices:  Reserved $13 | General Admission $11 | Youth, Senior Citizens, JMU Faculty/Staff $8 | JMU Students Free with JACard (enter through door E) Tickets are available online or by calling 540-568-3853.

The full 64-team WNIT bracket, announced late Monday evening, included two other CAA teams.  Drexel is hosting Iona and Old Dominion is hosting Davidson, with both games scheduled for Thursday.

First-round games will be played March 20-22, and second-round contests are scheduled for March 23-25.  All games are played at the home facilities of participating schools.

The JMU-North Carolina A&T winner plays the North Carolina State-Richmond winner in the second round.

Automatic bids to the WNIT were given to 29 teams, and there were 35 at-large berths, as chosen by the WNIT selection committee.

The Dukes enter postseason play with a 22-10 record after losing to Drexel in the CAA Tournament semifinals at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md., on Saturday.  It's the eight straight year that JMU has won at least 22 games and has advanced to postseason play.  JMU's eight consecutive postseason tournament appearances include NCAA tournament games in 2007, 2010 and 2011 and WNIT play in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012.

JMU is making its sixth trip to the WNIT and advanced to the tournament's championship game last season before losing at Oklahoma State in the championship game.

In 2009 the Dukes beat American in the first round before losing at Richmond in the second round.  In 2008 JMU posted wins over Radford and Indiana before losing at Kentucky in the round of 16.  In 2001 the Dukes advanced to the semifinals, and in 2006 the Dukes lost at Charlotte in a second-round game.
