HARRISONBURG, Va., March 30, 2010 - The James Madison football team begins its spring practice period Wednesday (March 31), opening a nearly four-week workout period in preparation for the 2010 season. The team's original Tuesday (March 30) spring-drill starting date was pushed back because of wet grounds.
NCAA rules allow Division I football programs up to 15 spring practices to be completed within a 34-day span. Limitations also are set on the number of practices that are allowed to be full-contact sessions.
JMU will conduct week-day workouts at 4 p.m. and Saturday sessions at varying times and locations. All sessions are open to the public, and a full spring schedule is listed below.
The Dukes' spring workouts will be held at the team's practice facility on the north edge of campus, near JMU's old baseball stadium, and at several off-campus locations because of the construction underway at JMU's Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field. Weather conditions can dictate whether practice is held on a particular day, and up-to-date schedule information can be obtained by calling the JMU football office at 540/568-6517.
The playing field at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field is covered to protect it during the current phase of stadium expansion, and with the field not being available for practice, several of the team's spring workouts will take place at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington and at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field is in the first phase of a construction project that will increase its seating capacity to approximately 25,000. Construction began shortly after the end of JMU's 2009 season, and the current phase is scheduled for completion in time for the Dukes to use the stadium during the 2010 season.
During spring drills JMU will be preparing for an 11-game 2010 schedule that will include eight Colonial Athletic Association games and three non-conference contests. The Dukes will meet a Football Bowl Subdivision team for the third-straight season in a Sept. 11 game at Virginia Tech and will play Football Championship Subdivision opponents in Morehead State (home, Sept. 4) and Liberty (home, Sept. 25).
JMU's opener will be the Sept. 4 game with Morehead State. The Dukes will have an off week after the Sept. 11 game at Virginia Tech and will play CAA foes for eight consecutive weeks following the Sept. 25 game with Liberty.
JMU's Oct. 2 game with Delaware will be during the university's Family Weekend, and JMU's homecoming will take place around the football team's Oct. 16 game with New Hampshire.
JMU is coming off a 6-5 season in 2009, and the Dukes have a 55-20 record during the last six seasons. JMU closed the 2009 season with four consecutive victories.
This season's JMU-Virginia Tech meeting will be the programs' seventh overall and first since 2003. The Dukes' other FBS foes during recent seasons have included West Virginia (2004), North Carolina (2007), Duke (2008) and Maryland (2009).
JMU and Morehead State will be playing for first time since meeting six times from 1979-87, and the Dukes will be playing Liberty for the second-straight season and the 16th time overall.
JMU's CAA schedule includes each of the league's other members nine football-playing members except for Rhode Island.
