Football Opens Spring Drills Today
Courtesy:JMUSports.com Release:03/22/2012
HARRISONBURG, Va., March 22, 2012 - The James Madison football team begins its spring practice period today, opening a nearly five-week workout period in preparation for the 2012 season.

NCAA rules allow Division I football programs up to 15 spring practices to be completed within a 34-day span. Limitations also are set on the number of practices that are allowed to be full-contact sessions.

The Dukes' spring workouts will be held either at the renovated Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field or the team's practice facility on the north edge of campus, near JMU's old baseball stadium, depending on weather and field conditions.

JMU will conduct week-day workouts at 4 p.m. and Saturday sessions and scrimmages will vary by location and time. All sessions are open to the public, and a full spring schedule is listed below. Weather conditions can dictate whether practice is held on a particular day, and up-to-date schedule information can be obtained by calling the JMU football office at 540/568-6517.

Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field was packed for the 2011 season, as the Dukes averaged playing in front of 25,002 fans per game, ranking second in the Football Championship Subdivision in average attendance.

During spring drills, JMU will be preparing for an 11-game 2012 season where they will face eight Colonial Athletic Association opponents, and nationally-ranked FBS foe West Virginia.

Coming off eight straight winning seasons and a berth in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Football Championships, JMU will start the season with a pair of home games against St. Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 1 and Alcorn State on Sept. 8. The Dukes will meet a Football Bowl Subdivision team for the fifth-straight season in the Sept. 15 game versus the Mountaineers at FedEx Field in Washington, D.C. This will be the second time the programs' will have met on the gridiron, as the two teams faced off in Morgantown in 2004.

Madison will open conference play on the road at Rhode Island Sat., Sept. 22. An open date will follow before the Dukes host the league-champion Tigers Sat., Oct. 6, as part of Family Weekend. Madison remains home the following week to host William & Mary Oct. 13 before traveling two hours down the road to take on the Richmond Spiders and former Liberty and new UR Head Coach Danny Rocco on Oct. 20.

JMU welcomes CAA newcomer Georgia State to Harrisonburg for Homecoming on Sat., Oct. 27 before going on the road for back-to-back road games at Maine, Nov. 3, and Villanova, Nov. 10. The conference slate wraps up with the newest Madison rival making its first trip to Bridgeforth, as Old Dominion comes to town on Sat., Nov. 17.

The 2012 Division I Football Championship Playoffs will begin Nov. 24, with the 20-team bracket wrapping up with the 2013 NCAA Championship Game in January 2013 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.

JMU is coming off a 8-5 season in 2011, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division I Football Championships, and the Dukes have a 63-25 record during the last seven seasons.
